I’m still on my feet, but this weekends temptations almost broke me.
It’s my son’s 11th birthday and he’s a chocolate guy, like I am.
So he started with these donuts in the morning for breakfast:
Then for Dessert he had a chocolate cake:
So moist and so yummy. I abstained. It wasn’t easy. It would have been much easier to just binge and restart. But I’m so much better off when I just leave it alone.
On Sunday I turn to the written word for strength and resolve. Here is a quote attributed to St. Augustine that fits my mood:
To many, total abstinence is easier than perfect moderation
I enjoyed reading about St. Augustine on Wikipedia today:
And I found this line relevant and interesting about the St. Augustine:
Augustine took the view that, if a literal interpretation contradicts science and our God-given reason, the Biblical text should be interpreted metaphorically. While each passage of Scripture has a literal sense, this “literal sense” does not always mean that the Scriptures are mere history; at times they are rather an extended metaphor.
And so it is with sugar. If you can’t eat it literally. Eat it metaphorically.
